Tough Love xoxo
If you’re spending your days wondering why your team doesn’t just do their job, get ready for some tough love.
It’s not them- it’s you. (well sometimes it’s them, but that’s another article)
Sound harsh? I’m saying this because I know you’re frustrated trying to figure it out. And I know that even when small mindset changes are made about what it means to be a boss, things will start to happen.
The authoritarian model of leadership is outdated. If your team is not inspired and engaged in their job, the solution is not to yell louder. The better solution is to start exploring what is not working and how we can do things differently.
Playing the blame game is a waste of time.
I get it. Change is scary. But how is “we’ve always done it this way” working out?
I know you’re busy, and thinking about how happy the team is may not be a priority. But it should be.
The only things we can control in life are what we think and what we do. So what changes can we make to our thoughts and actions that will better our workplace?
Letting the team know what they are doing RIGHT consistently, along with sharing constructive criticism way more than once a year, will have a bigger impact. Showing humanity does not make us weak, it makes us strong leaders.
Do you have talented team members who seem disengaged?
Communicate the values and mission of the business on a regular basis so the connection is made between their roles and the big picture, and who your company serves, and they will ask “what else can I do to help?”
If it’s your goal to create a happier, more creative and productive workplace, the place to start is with how you can do things differently.
Ask yourself questions like:
· What is the atmosphere like in our working environment?
· Do we welcome honest feedback from employees and ACT on that feedback?
· How do we communicate with each other?
Ask your team questions like:
· How can I help you do your job better?
· What would you like to do more of at work?
· What are some things we could be doing better as a company?
And asking those questions just once isn’t enough. Do it regularly.
Take those answers and decide what is working well and expand on them, and decide what needs to be tweaked or changed completely. Then take action.
Humanity and leadership CAN coexist.
Do you want to grow your business?
Do you want to attract top talent to come work with you?
Do you want to increase production?
Do you want to stop spending money finding replacements for people who leave the team?
Do you want to have customers who rave about their experience with your company?
The idea of what work culture is supposed to be is evolving, and we as business leaders need to evolve with it.
Make the team a priority, and watch how it permeates into every aspect of your business.
This may go against everything you’ve ever been taught about being “in charge,” and that’s ok.
If you’re ready to start doing things differently, I can help with that.
If you need help discovering ways to inspire your team and would love a custom action plan that will put you on the path to a happy workplace, I can help with that.
If you want fresh eyes on what’s really going on around the office so you can start to implement changes that will make a real impact, I can help with that.
Let’s work together to better your business!
